RAINFOREST WALK
"One of the greatest glories of the central North Island is its
rainforests, in their scenic and botanic splendour, of which Whirinaki
is perhaps supreme."
Emeritus Professor of Zoology, John Morton

Located
in the Urewera ranges of the central North Island, Whirinaki is a
60,000 hectare native rainforest. With its five native tree species
- some towering to 65 metres - Whirinaki is regarded as one of the
world's great rainforests. It is also home to a wide range of rare
wildlife and bird species, some dating back to the Jurassic era, 200
million years ago.
Whirinaki Rainforest Treks are provided by Whirinaki Guided Walks
Ltd and are licensed by the Department of Conservation. Walks and
treks of between one and three days are led by professional Maori
guides who offer flora and fauna interpretation. These fully-catered
packages begin at Rotorua and Taupo.
The three-day treks involve overnight
stays in a sophisticated safari-style camp deep in the heart of the
rainforest.
